<< The Five Quadrants of Portland

FEATURING:

Alana Semuels of the Atlantic, discussing her recent piece "The Racist History of Portland, the Whitest City in America."  Contrasting Portland's progressive image with its deep history of racism, Alana delves back in state history to the 1880s and uncovers persistent exclusion and discrimination in the years since, the lasting impact of which we continue to see in Portland today.

AND:

Part one of a two-part special on the Springwater Corridor Trail.  The bike path, in recent years, has become home to up to 500 people living in encampments along the trail.  This month, Mayor Charlie Hales announced a complete sweep of the trail and its residents prior to planned environmental cleanup, following months of criticism on his homelessness policies from business and neighborhood groups.  The sweep was originally scheduled for August 1st, but following pressure from homeless advocates and the threat of a lawsuit, on Wednesday he delayed the sweep until September 1st to allow more time for outreach.  This week, we visit nearby homeless service provider the Clackamas Service Center - the primary day service center for people living on the trail - and hear from executive director Debra Mason and houseless clients Katrina and Christopher.
