D O O M

Just shy of New Years it was revealed that the super villain MF Doom had passed.

As a modern day marvel, Daniel Dumile created a unique lane of stream of conscious poetry. A true pioneer of rap and lifetime scholar of the art of the rhyme, he was truly the bard of hip hop.

An inventive producer, his sample heavy work has its own distinct flavor that belongs to a class of the Madlib’s and Dilla’s of the world. That slightly off kilter arrangement that favors audible fingerprints over quantization

Doom’s music has played such a large part in my own life that I felt compelled to put together a tribute to the shapeshifting villain. There will be no mic breaks instead a constant flow that touch on a mere fraction of his impressive outlet.

For those listeners who are unfamiliar with Doom, I’ve included some clips from his 2015 Red Bull Music Academy interview that speak to his creative process, the characters that he inhabits, why he’s the villain, and the reason why he wore the mask.

This is by no means an exhaustive dive into his rich catalog, rather a gentle traipse through, barely scratching the surface, highlighting his lyrical prowess through projects like MF DOOM, Madvillain, Victor Vaughn, Danger Doom, King Geedorah and JJ DOOM.
