Why should I become an XRAY.FM member?

We’re glad you asked! XRAY.FM is a noncommercial station, which means that we exist for and because of the grassroots support of our listeners. If you value our commitment to work toward a more just community through open and honest media and appreciate our diverse music programming, we need your help to thrive and grow. A city like Portland deserves so much more than Top 40 on loop and stale discussions of current events. With your support, we can continue to bring content to the airwaves that is as diverse and distinctive as our city.

How do I become a member of XRAY.FM?

You canbecome a member by making a monthly donation of $10 or more or a one-time donation of $120 or more. Monthly giving makes a huge difference to small nonprofits like us so we can plan for the future and make investments in our community with confidence. We accept all major credit cards, e-check payments, and Paypal.

Can students and seniors become members at a discounted rate?

People of all ages and walks of life are welcome to be XRAY members! To make membership more accessible to all of our listeners, we offer a student, senior, and starving artist membership to join for a discounted rate of $5/month (or $60 annually). Student/senior/starving artist members receive the benefits listed in the $10-$15 per month tier.

Where does my money go?

Support from our members goes directly to producing over 120 hours of content per week that highlights the best and most distinctive voices and sounds of Portland, alongside other XRAY programming like community events, teach-ins, community workshops,and more. Monthly membership donations are a reliable income stream that allows us to pay regular overhead expenses like rent for our office and studio, music licensing, monthly fees to operate our FM signals and online stream, pay our staff, upkeep for our website and app, and more. When we raise larger amounts of money during fund drives we are able to make bigger investments. In the past, we've used opportunities like this to pay for live remote broadcast equipment, purchasing our originating signal (91.1), building a production studio, and more.

What benefits does membership bring?

In addition to our eternal gratitude, all members get a merch item of their choice based on their membership level, an XRAY sticker, access to exclusive giveaways, discounts on annual merchandise, and discounts on XRAY events. Depending on the size of your contribution, you can also receive special edition XRAY t-shirts (a new design by local artists released each year during the Spring Fund Drive) or other limited edition merchandise.

How long does my membership last?

If you make a one-time donation your membership will be current for 1 year with the option to renew. If you sign up with a monthly donation, your membership will renew automatically each year without any interruption in payments. I don’t live in the Portland area. Can I still join?

Of course! The majority of our members reside in Portland, but anyone is welcome to join. In addition to the Portland metro area we also have members and listeners from all over the country, and even as far away as France, Australia, South Korea, The UK, and Germany. 

I just joined! When will I receive my XRAY.FM Thank You Gift?

Typically we are able to package and mail member goodies within 2-3 weeks of your first donation, although expect a longer wait if you join during or immediately after a membership drive (April/May and October/November), usually 4-6 weeks after the conclusion of the drive, due to the volume of packages we deal with during those times. Your patience is appreciated, as we rely on volunteers to help with packing and shipping. We typically restock our merchandise after fund drives and our offerings will change throughout the year.

How can I buy other XRAY.FM merchandise?

Some merchandise is member-exclusive, but we you can find our current items available for purchase in our merch store at or in the footer of this page.  

**We have made a lot of exclusive merchandise over the years. So, if you see something around town that you want, always ask, but know that we may have made the piece as part of a special event or for a specific group and won't be restocking it.

How can I change or update my credit card or contact information?

You can update your personal information online here. You can also call the XRAY office at (503) 233-2700 or email to speak with a staff member who can help make any updates you need. If you've received an email about a declining monthly donation due to a new or expired credit card, these are the locations you can fix that.

Can I gift a membership to someone else by making a donation in their name?

An XRAY membership makes an excellent gift! Send us a note at if you want to purchase a membership as a gift and we’ll make sure the correct name is put on the account and help make the recipient feel special!

Do I have to include my real name, email, and mailing address during registration? I’d prefer to stay anonymous.

It is very helpful for us to have current contact information for our members so we can send tax receipts at the end of the year, and can get in touch if there is ever an issue with your monthly payments. Also, without a mailing address, we will be unable to send your XRAY swag or give you membership perks like ticket giveaways and XRAY event discounts. We value the privacy of our individual givers, so the most you'll hear us say about individual members publicly is a first name thank you on air during a fund drive. You always have the ability to opt-out of communications so that we will only reach out if it is absolutely necessary.

I set up a monthly membership, how do future month's transactions work?

Unless otherwise requested, we set all recurring memberships to run on the 15th of each month. This enables us to manage volume with a small team, and ensure that no one falls through the cracks. You may see a transaction take a few days to reflect in your account because of bank and credit card processing timelines. Because people become monthly members at all months of the year, memberships are set to run monthly until cancelled or an end date is requested. You'll get a comprehensive tax receipt in January annually with the sum total of all monthly donations. If for whatever reason, your current payment method does not go through, you'll get an email with instructions on how to fix it.
