SONG OF THE THIN MAN
DIRECTOR: EDWARD BUZZELL
US, 1947

The last of the six classic THIN MAN films pairs William Powell as Nick Charles—the nattiest ex-cop you’ll ever meet—and the inimitable Myrna Loy as Nora, his wry urbane socialite wife. The story begins with a murder on a yacht and leads the crime-fighting couple through Manhattan jazz clubs offering them plenty of cocktails and hep-cat lingo along the way. Sure, a few people get murdered, but it’s all so very stylish and civilized. (86 mins.)

SEXY BEAST
DIRECTOR: JONATHAN GLAZER
UK/SPAIN, 2000

Famed music video director (Radiohead, Blur) Jonathan Glazer’s first feature updates the classic heist film with equal doses of sharp comedy and chilling menace. Gal (Ray Winstone), a London gangster retired to the south of Spain with his porn star wife and pool boy, is reluctantly pulled back into a life of crime by his old mentor, Don Logan (Ben Kingsley), a frighteningly and hilariously unhinged maniac. “Spouting profanity, staring daggers at any perceived enemy, and talking nuts to himself in a mirror like De Niro in a Cockney TAXI DRIVER, Kingsley creates an unforgettable monster.”—Rolling Stone(89 mins.)

THE 10TH VICTIM
DIRECTOR: ELIO PETRI
ITALY/FRANCE, 1965

“Petri’s black comedy imagines the hunting of humans as a government-sanctioned, globally televised sport, a gladiatorial combat meant to relieve tension and settle conflicts in an otherwise anesthetized world devoted to mindless consumption. THE 10TH VICTIM amusingly remains a classic ‘commedia all’italiana’ of the 1960s, with Marcello Mastroianni in his archetypical role as the castrated Casanova struggling to maintain his inbred macho poise as he is assaulted not only by Ursula Andress’s gun-toting Amazon, but by a mercenary wife (Luce Bonifassy) and an impatient mistress (Elsa Martinelli), who have joined forces against him.”—The New York Times. (92 mins.)

WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN
DIRECTOR: PEDRO ALMÓDOVAR
SPAIN, 1988

The film that made the director an international cinema icon, WOMEN—in typical Almodóvar style—weaves an array of colorful characters into a single, manic-depressive symphony. Carmen Maura highlights as the heroine Pepa, a TV star heartbroken by her lover Ivan (Fernando Guillén), and desperate to find her bearings. “Gorging on the bad, bad world of TV soap operas, tabloid news, and those Roy Lichtenstein cartoons where anguished women lament their lives with ‘Brad’, Almodovar gets a wonderful rise out of life’s lows.”—Washington Post(90 mins.)

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGH SCHOOL
DIRECTOR: ALLAN ARKUSH
US, 1979

When Principal Togar tries to confiscate ex-cheerleader and aspiring songwriter Riff Randall’s (P.J. Soles) ticket to the upcoming Ramones concert and burn their records, the students enlist the Ramones in a punk-style coup. With rollicking performances by the Ramones and a wall-to-wall soundtrack that includes Chuck Berry, Devo, Alice Cooper, Fleetwood Mack, Nick Lowe, and more, B-movie master Roger Corman’s spoof of 50’s musicals and ode to personal freedom still rocks. (93 mins.)

STRANGERS ON A TRAIN
DIRECTOR: ALFRED HITCHCOCK
US, 1951

Tennis pro Guy Haines is in a bad marriage when he’s approached by a perfect stranger, Bruno (Robert Walker), who idly contemplates the perfect murder. Bruno speculates that if he gets Guy’s wife out of the way, then Guy could take care of Bruno’s untenable father and each could have an alibi for the murder they’d be suspected of and no discernable motive for the crime they committed. “Bruno’s manner is pushy and insinuating, with homoerotic undertones . . . not a psychological study, however, but a first-rate thriller with odd little kinks now and then.”—Roger Ebert. (101 mins.)

MONTY PYTHON’S THE MEANING OF LIFE
DIRECTOR: TERRY JONES, TERRY GILLIAM
UK, 1983

With something to offend most any sensibility, the comedy troupe of Monty Python offers this comprehensive and nonsensical guide to life—from birth to death. Filled with uproariously funny sketches and songs, the film is a grab bag of outrageous contemplations of the absurdity of life where everything is over the top and nothing is sacred ...well, perhaps one thing. (107 mins.)

Red Bull Flugtag challenges the brave and brainy to design, build and pilot home-made flying machines off a 28-foot-high flight deck in hopes of soaring into the wild blue yonder…or more often, plunging into the waters below. Flugtag, which means “flying day” in German, pushes the envelope of human-powered flight, but competitors need more than airtime to reach the podium. Teams are judged on three criteria: flight distance, creativity of the craft, and showmanship. This criteria has inspired flying tacos, prehistoric pterodactyls, winnebagos with wings and even Snoopy and the gang to grace the Flugtag flight decks! Since the first Red Bull Flugtag took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1992, more than 100 Red Bull Flugtags have been held around the globe, attracting up to 300,000 spectators for a single event.

"Since day one, the idea behind Pickathon has always been pretty simple: what does it take to be the best weekend festival of the year for music lovers?

This question has driven us to highly refine an experience that is truly unique. Innovation has always been at the center of this process and through the years many important elements have come together; collaborating widely on yearly diverse lineups that are built on the idea of great music being the sole criteria; refining six unique performance venues designed to create juxtaposing alternate realities; trusting important decisions can be discussed and made with our online community such as maintaining a low crowd density; becoming the only large music festival to eliminate plastic and minimize single use items; recruiting the finest food and drink purveyors in the land; focusing constantly on eliminating "normal" festival hassles; enabling families to thrive; working with the Pendarvis Family to create a highly designed paradise of a festival grounds, and the list goes on."

Willamette River (westside) Tom McCall Bowl - Waterfront Park

What the heck is THE BIG FLOAT?

The Big Float V will take place on the afternoon of Sunday, July 26, 2015 on the Willamette River in downtown Portland. The goal, quite simply, is to encourage people to “get into the river” and support its preservation and healthy development as a recreational resource. And to have a whale of a good time in the process.

Open to all ages, the event begins with, naturally, a parade. Floaters gather at Tom McCall Bowl (where the Blues Festival is held), then carry or wear their floatation devices and march south along Waterfront Park to the put-in point at "Poet's Beach" beneath the Marquam Bridge.

Floaters will paddle down river and land on the west bank at the Tom McCall Bowl. Here, Portland's downtown beach party will be held - complete with music barge and live bands, food carts, beer/wine garden, sponsor booths, and a kids' activities area.

This newly created beach area, open for public swimming, was formed by TBF volunteers as part of the Human Access Project.

There’s a reason that musical trailblazers from Galactic to DJ Logic have recently chosen to collaborate with High and Mighty Brass Band! and legends such as Dr. John, Rebirth Brass Band, and Trombone Shorty have chosen them to share the stage. Co-mingling band members from New Orleans, NYC, and a host of other cities across the globe, this dynamic krewe has the unique ability to combine classic New Orleans Funk and R&B with more modern Afro-Beat and Hip Hop influences. Their live performances are both fiercely entertaining and refreshingly inspiring, connecting the band with each and every audience member. Just catching a single performance will make it abundantly clear why HMBB! is known as “a party in progress!”

Portland’s Jujuba rounds out the bill. A goodfoot favorite, Jujuba’s high-energy Afrobeat and juju has been leaving sweaty dance floors in it’s wake for over 10 years. Led by master talking drummer, Nojeem Lasisi (King Sunny Ade), the band floats a full horn line over rubbery bass lines and massive percussion. This one will be a darned good time!!!

Spirit Mountain Casino
8:00pm Saturday, July 25, 2015

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Kennedy Center have both honored him for his lifetime achievements. His songs are recognized and beloved by every generation. And on Saturday, July 25th, the legend Brian Wilson himself is taking the center stage at Spirit Mountain Casino.

As one half of The Beach Boys’ co-founders, Wilson penned and performed many of the group’s top hits including all the songs from Pet Sounds—a powerhouse album Rolling Stone placed as number 2 in their “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” article.

Household staples like “Good Vibrations” and “Surfin’ U.S.A” will forever be summer anthems, while “God Only Knows” and “Sloop John B” blend pop with crushing sentimentality. Wilson’s upbeat style and one-of-a-kind musical accompaniment inspired dozens of artists.

Wilson’s meticulous songwriting approach has become legend in the music industry. His larger-than-life presence recently inspired Love & Mercy, a biopic starring John Cusack.

While legions of artists show fidelity to psychedelia’s roots, Unknown Mortal Orchestra has always shared the rare quality that makes the genre’s legends vital, a constant need for exploration. Last year, frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ruban Nielson descended into his home studio in a Portland basement to chart out where’s he traveled since his last set of unhinged psych-soul ballads. He discovered that the best way for him to move forward would be to look back. Where Nielson addressed the pain of being alone on II, Multi-Love takes on the complications of being together.

Come see Australian indie-pop 4 piece Dick Diver!

Dick Diver are a four-piece from Melbourne Australia renowned for their catchy songs, onstage charm and wry humour. Formed in 2008 with guitarists Rupert Edwards and Alistair McKay, drummer Steph Hughes (Boomgates) and bassist Al Montfort (Total Control, UV Race, Lower Plenty et al) they’re finally bringing their songs to the USA and Canada this July in the wake of their new album Melbourne, Florida.

A wide-ranging and diverse album, Melbourne, Florida is simultaneously smoother and more eccentric than their previous world-conquering efforts Calendar Days (2013) and New Start Again (2011). Recorded in an old barn on Australia's shipwreck coast with long-time collaborator Mikey Young, the man-myth behind such rock juggernauts as Total Control and Eddy Current Suppression Ring, the atmosphere and intoxication shine through in warm horn sections, aching melodies, and such memorable lines as ‘Europe’s fucked probably’, ‘there’s sick on your lapel, Daddy-o’, or ‘don’t get a gun / talk to a counsellor’. Come down and boogie people.

Melbourne, Florida, is out now on US label Trouble In Mind and in Australia, New Zealand and Japan by Chapter Music.

Earth was formed in Olympia, Wa. In 1989 by Dylan Carlson, with an ever evolving line up including Slim Moon (Kill Rock Stars founder), Joe Preston (Melvins) and many others. After moving to Seattle and signing to Sub Pop in 1990 they would release 3 full lengths and an EP including "Earth 2". Considered by many a definitive statement of the drone triumphant, others have described it as "the inevitable result of the damage done by downers to perception of time". Whichever the case, its influence is undeniable.
