Fell Runner is a Los Angeles-based rock band formed in 2012 by four music students at the California Institute of the Arts. Originally started as an independent study in applying West African rhythms to western song forms, the band developed to encompass a broad range of influences and create music that is asymmetrically rhythmic while simultaneously melodic and danceable. They have performed at venues such as The Echo, The Bootleg Theater, and The New Parrish and will be releasing their self titled debut CD accompanied by a tour of the west coast in the late summer.

CIRCUIT DES YEUX
Circuit des Yeux
Haley Fohr’s music strikes a unique balance between the personal and universal. As Circuit des Yeux she creates music that embodies the complexity of human emotions, juxtaposing tenderness and grief, ecstasy and horror, using sounds as representations of the emotional spectrum that we all experience. Fohr’s striking voice, an impassioned baritone, is the music’s centerpiece and guiding force. On In Plain Speech, Fohr is joined by some of the most progressive musicians in the Chicago music community; Cooper Crain (Cave, Bitchin Bajas), Whitney Johnson (Verma), Rob Frye (Bitchin Bajas), Adam Luksetich (Little Scream), and Kathleen Baird (Spires That In The Sunset Rise). Fohr cements her reputation as a fearless songwriter and inventive arranger with this stirring collection of songs that are both gorgeous and emotionally potent.
In Plain Speech represents the start of a new, more collaborative chapter for Circuit des Yeux. While previous works were solo affairs, not only in performance, but emotionally tied to a sense of confinement and place, these new songs were composed after a move to a collective living space, giving Fohr an opportunity to break free of the isolation that informed her previous albums. Fohr brought her community, literally, to the recording. In Plain Speech continues her collaboration with Crain, but it is her first recording with a full band, who are all leaders in Chicago’s new wave of creative musicians. Her songs, while always potent when delivered solo, shine in this new band context. Companionship and solidarity are themes woven throughout the album. “Do The Dishes” is a meditation on sisterhood, and a message to other women to take risks, follow their passions deeply and to love themselves. “Fantasize the Scene” explores the idea of eternal friendship.
Extensive touring after Circuit des Yeux’s acclaimed 2013 album Overdue influenced the making of the album in several ways. On that tour, which stretched for months throughout Europe and the US, Fohr toured solo, no band, no tour manager, no driver, and in that solitude learned to commune with the audience in a way that she hadn’t ever before. That connection sparked in her mind a conversation with the audience, and many of the lyrics on In Plain Speech are directed at “you,” the listener. She also became acutely aware of disquiet, a pervasive anxiety, which permeated society in almost every city she visited. “I felt an uneasiness that superseded phonetic communication,” she writes. “Something dim is in the air, and it is looming large.” This anxiety creeped into songs like “A Story Of This World,” which is a call for change of priorities and values among the world’s leadership.
Fohr will tour with the musicians who play on In Plain Speech throughout 2015. If the band’s debut show is any indication, these shows will be lush and captivating, the band enhancing her already compelling performances. Fohr self-released her 2013 album Overdue, which was praised by NPR, Pitchfork, Tiny Mix Tapes, and more - an impressive display of support for an artist working on her own. 2015 will certainly bring many more exciting chapters in Fohr’s ongoing story.
MARISA ANDERSON
Marisa Anderson
Combining boundless creative imagination with a deep reverence for American folk, blues and country music, MARISA ANDERSON's guitar playing is fluid, emotional, dexterous and original. Signal to Noise magazine calls Anderson's guitar work "Utterly fabulous", TIme Out London refers to her playing as "Stunning…haunting and evocative", Pitchfork calls her latest record, 'Mercury', "Brilliant" and Wire Magazine says, "Her sound has strength in restless variety…Anderson's playing is heartfelt and utterly American, free from grandstanding and steeped in respect for the old tradition." Before going solo in 2009, Anderson played guitar in the Dolly Ranchers and the Evolutionary Jass Band. In the past two years, Anderson's music has landed her festival appearances in Europe and the United States and opening slots for artists including Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Devil Makes 3 and Sharon Van Etten. In August 2013, KBOO Community Radio released a split 7″ featuring Anderson and Elizabeth Cotton. Anderson's music has been featured on NPR and on soundtracks including 'Smokin' Fish', 'For the Love of Dolly', 'Girls Rock', and 'Gift To Winter'. Her writings on music and activism have appeared in Bitch Magazine, Leaf Litter, and in Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls, the book. Her new album, "Traditional and Public Domain Songs," is now available from the Grapefruit Record Club.

More info here!

The Montavilla Neighborhood Association is gearing up for the second annual Montavilla Jazz Festival (MJF). Last year attendees enjoyed fantastic original, creative, Portland-based jazz over two days at Post5 Theatre. Once again MJF organizers have assembled a program that highlights the best of originally composed jazz created and performed by Portland-based artists, this year at a larger venue, Portland Metro Arts.

MJF 2015 Headliner Darrell Grant will debut “All 4 Naught”, an exploration of current popular music that mines the jazz tradition while exploring new improvisational forms. Grant has appeared on major concert stages from the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall to the Monterey, Telluride, and San Francisco Jazz Festivals, and has been a guest on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz on NPR. “All 4 Naught” features Darrell Grant on piano, Eric Gruber on bass, and Tyson Stubelek on drums, along with special guests to be announced.

The complete MJF 2015 roster features some of Portland’s top musical talent, some returning from last year, and others making their MJF debut. All share a dedication to actively composing and presenting new works. See the complete lineup at montavillajazzfest.com/artists.

Outdoor food court with music: Also new in 2015! The festival has added onsite food and beverage options courtesy of Portland Mercado’s Mixteca Catering and The Wine Nomad. The food court will also feature music by local student musicians.

MJF 2015 Sponsors: More than fifty local businesses have contributed as sponsors and inkind partners to make MJF 2015 happen. Many are within walking distance of the festival. Organizers encourage attendees to shop, get a bite to eat, or simply relax and socialize at these businesses during their visit to Montavilla. Portland’s comedy scene has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past few years, with local standups finding success in LA (Ian Karmel, Ron Funches); the nationally recognized ‘Bridgetown Comedy Festival’; and the more-accurate-than-we-would-like-to-admit ‘Portlandia’. The Stumptown Improv Festival is proud to be part of this comedy explosion by showcasing the smart, original, and always fresh world of improvisational comedy.

The Stumptown Improv Festival’s debut in 2014 was a major success. We attracted some of the most well-regarded improv groups performing today from LA, San Franscisco, Vancouver, BC, Minneapolis, and, of course, Portland. Performers who are vets on the festival scene raved that “this is one of the best festivals we’ve ever been a part of”. The audiences agreed as well. Both of our Friday night shows sold out and, as the buzz increased, both Saturday night shows were sold out hours before we opened the doors.

Will we make magic again in 2015? Short answer: yes. Long answer: yessssssssss. We’ve got some of the best groups in the country traipsing out here (yes, we said “traipsing”) and are offering more showtimes to accommodate the throngs (yes, we said “throngs”). We’re also introducing a brand-new “Three-Show Pass” so you can a la carte this festival. And have you seen the Portland improv scene lately? Get ready for some hot ‘n’ fresh talent from our fair city. SUMMER IS HERE.

A shout-out to festival co-founders Leon Anderson, Jed Arkley, and Erin Jean O’Regan. Three times as sweet, three times as sassy.

How it works: each show begins with a full wheel of juicy story prompts. One of the 8 storytellers will be randomly drawn. They spin the wheel to decide the prompt for their story. They can play or pass. If they pass another teller can steal their prompt. Then the risky part…each storyteller has only 5 minutes to come up with a true 5-minute story based on that prompt! It’s like we invented a new game called truth AND dare. At the end of the night, the audience will select a winner who will receive 50 bucks and some other cool prizes, like bragging rights for life. The winner will be invited to come back to the next show!

Two returning winners who've yet to defend their titles! From the January show drummer for Blitzen Trapper, BRIAN KOCH (PDX) and from the April  show Comedian CAITLIN WEIERHAUSER (PDX) will take on past crowd favorites Writer/Producer JESSICA LEE WILLIAMSON (LA), 105.1 The Buzz's DARIA ELIUK (PDX), and Writer for Arrested Development, JOEY SLAMON (LA) along with first-timer, World Traveler/Lover/Fighter, KRIYA KAPING (PDX) and two more!
